Many observers believe that Europe is at the beginning of a new industrial revolution, considered to be the fourth such leap forward and hence labelled Industry 4.0. This new digital industrial revolution holds the promise of increased flexibility in manufacturing, mass customization, increased speed, better quality and improved productivity.

Regarding the main economic sectors present in the territory of Alicante, we can highlight:

The Costa Blanca is the name that identifies the province of Alicante which is a unique province, a destination open all year round and that stands out for its natural beauty. The Costa Blanca is one of the most important tourist destinations in our country, being the second Spanish destination in terms of number of hotel overnight stays for Spaniards and the third in terms of number of Spanish travellers, reaching 17 million hotel overnight stays in 2016.

It is also the most visited destination in the Valencian Community. Last year more than 12 million passengers were registered at Alicante-Elche airport, a significant increase of 19%. The average hotel occupancy rate is also higher than the national average, reaching 80.9% last year. With regard to supply, the Costa Blanca has 427 hotel establishments and 67,294 beds, 4.6% of the national total. Alicante-Elche airport is currently connected to 110 international destinations, opening 16 new routes in 2017. Last year the Alicante port received 89,000 cruise ships and 54 cruise ships.

The footwear and food industry generates 42% of the profits of the Alicante province industry. The footwear and leather industry is located mainly in the Valle del Vinalopó, Villena, Elche and Elda. The food industry also has an important position in the province, and the toy manufacture industry is particularly relevant in Ibi.

Agriculture and fisheries

The province of Alicante has an important agricultural production, mainly focused on vegetables, fruit trees and the wine sector. In the Vega Baja region, there are fertile irrigated orchards that produce all kinds of vegetables that are marketed throughout Europe.

The main topics that we want to cover in this event are innovation and digitalization in Tourism, Water Industry, Agriculture and Industry 4.0 in the traditional sectors of the province of Alicante (as footwear, food and toy industries).

This event wants to discuss how innovation and digitization can contribute to a rapid transformation in the design, manufacture, operation and service of the systems and
manufacturing products in tourism, water industry, agriculture and industry 4.0 in the
traditional sectors.

Why this topic is relevant for Alicante Province?

Alicante County is implementing the Smart Province Strategy to break the digital gap. The aim is to join forces in the innovation ecosystem between administrations, enterprises and universities to digitalize the province. Main sectors involved in this strategy are Tourism, Water, Agriculture and I4.0 in footwear, food and toy industries.

The footwear and food industry generate 42% of the profits of our industry.

Food industry also has an important position in the province, and toy manufacture industry is particularly relevant in Ibi. In this area, companies develop I4.0 projects.
